You’ve been warned.

The Three Musketeers? I know, you’re wondering who I’m talking about. I’ll be doing a comparison of the three main characters of the Pokemon franchise: Ash from the anime, Red from the games, and Red from the Pokemon Adventures manga. Now, let me start off by saying that these are not all the same character. Many people think that you play as Ash in RBY/FRLG, as the design for Ash and Red is very similar. Same with Red from the games and Red from the manga. However, all three of these trainers differ in amounts of skill, personalities, back stories, and many other aspects.

Ash Ketchum is a young boy who has a dream. A dream of becoming a Pokemon Master! At age ten, he leaves home to go on a Pokemon journey. His first Pokemon is Pikachu. At first, the Pikachu hates Ash, but they quickly grow friendly with each other. Ash meets two people, Misty and Brock, who go on his journey with him. He catches some Pokemon, beats a bunch of Gyms, and loses in the Pokemon League. He repeats this process many times over, moving to different regions. Personality wise, Ash is very friendly to just about anyone, but especially loves Pokemon above all other things. Ash has proven himself to be a somewhat skilled Pokemon trainer, winning the Orange League and Battle Frontier and defeating several legendary Pokemon, such as Brandon’s Regice, Tobias’ Darkrai and Latios, and Nolan’s Articuno.

While he is a good trainer, his intellect is… well, lacking, to say the least. He frequently forgets moves, evolutions, and even Pokemon. He says some REALLY stupid things, my favorite being in the episode “Chikorita’s Big Upset” where Nurse Joy suggests that Chikorita should get some newly developed Pokemon therapy. Ash’s response? “Huh? There’s a new kind of Pokemon called Therapy?”. All in all, Ash is a good protagonist, if a bit daft at times. His passion is relatable and he is the trainer the majority of people remember the best. His original team consisted of Pikachu, Butterfree, Pidgeot, Bulbasaur, Charizard, and Squirtle.

Well, then. There goes my childhood…

Red (the video game version) left his house at ten years old to go on a Pokémon journey. His first Pokemon was a Pikachu. He went through the Kanto region, destroying any trainer he came across and easily becoming the Pokemon League champion, as well as catching lots of Pokemon. On his journey, he defeated the entire Team Rocket terrorist organisation. He’s only lost once, to Gold. While the majority of people prefer Red to Ash, it’s difficult for me to judge, as we never really get any character development for Red. We do know at least that he REALLY likes mountains, as he’s stood on Mount Silver for a very long time, never really doing anything except battling people who talk to him.

His party consists of Charizard, Venusaur, Blastoise, Pikachu, Snorlax, and Espeon (in GSC) or Lapras (in HGSS). That is the party he had when he faced Gold, but it’s very easy to see where he got those Pokemon. In Pokemon Yellow version, Red receives Bulbasaur after its been nursed back to health, (similarly to how Ash received his Bulbasaur) he got his Charmander from a trainer that didn’t think he was a good trainer, (also like how Ash got Charizard) and Officer Jenny gave Red his Squirtle after it had been mischievous (Like Ash’s Squirtle). Red caught Snorlax when it was blocking his way on Route 12, and he got Lapras at Silph Co. Espeon may have been added due to Red from Adventures having an Espeon named Vee, and Gamefreak may have wanted to showcase the new Eevee evolution.

Looking at that party, it’s easy to see why Red and Ash get confused. Ash owns (or has owned) all of those Pokemon (or their pre evolved forms) other than Espeon. All in all, Red is good as a silent protagonist, similar in style to Link or Mario. He’s about 8000 times cooler than either of those two particular characters, however.

I know, right? Jeez, Red, sometimes I think you and I are the only sensible ones.

Red from the Pokemon Adventures has a different story than Ash and Red. He didn’t start out with a Pikachu like they did, he didn’t collect eight badges by challenging each gym, and we never meet any members of his family, whereas both Ash and Red’s mothers are in their respective stories. Red started out with Poli, a Poliwag he caught himself. It evolved into a Poliwhirl to save Red from drowning when he was younger. He received his Bulbasaur, Saur, when he accidentally let all of the Pokémon out of Professor Oak’s lab. He had to catch them all back for Oak, and Saur seemed to like Red, so the Professor let him keep it. Red went through the Kanto region, winning badges at the gyms in Pewter City, Cerulean City, Celadon City, and Cinnabar Island. Along the way, he catches LOTS of Pokemon, but mostly sticks to his team of Poli, Saur, Pika (a Pikachu), Lax (a Snorlax), Gyara (a Gyarados), and Aero (an Aerodactyl). Red also faces competition from Blue and Green, trainers who are also going through Kanto. When Red eventually reaches Saffron City, he combats Team Rocket, collects the three remaining badges from the three commanders of Team Rocket (Lt. Surge, Sabrina, and Koga). He then competes in the Pokémon league and wins against Blue to become the champion.

This Red is very different than the video game Red. When he starts out, he’s very cocky and egotistical, much like Ash. Unlike Ash, however, Red can almost always back it up. Over the series, Red gradually grows more mature, being less cocky and more willing to accept help from others. Red from Adventures is my favorite of the three protagonists. He’s the most well developed of the three, he’s the best trainer, and he isn’t cursed with Ash’s stupidity or Red’s indifference.

And his hat is BACKWARDS!

There have been many theories about these three characters. I’d like to share my three favorite theories.
The first is a theory that Red (video games) is actually Ash’s older brother. Red lived in Pallet Town with his mother, Delia, and his father. When his brother Ash was born, Red quickly grew fond of him. Red cared deeply for Ash, and when Delia and her husband got a divorce, that love grew even deeper. Ash also idolized Red, to the point of wanting to imitate him as closely as possible. This explains the similarities in their parties. When Red reached the age to leave on his Pokemon journey, he knew that Ash would also do the same when he came of age. When Red battled Brock and won the boulder badge, he spoke to Brock afterwards. Brock mentioned that he was raising his brothers and sisters by himself. Red knew that that would mean Brock is proficient at taking care of children. Red asked Brock if he could take care of his brother Ash when he came through Pewter City. Brock said that he would, and that he should also ask his friend Misty if she could do the same. Red thanked Brock, and continued on his journey.

During his journey, he corresponded with Ash over telephone and E mail. He also grew very fond of his Pokemon. When he became the champion, he decided the go train on Mount Silver. After he lost to Gold, he phoned Ash. Ash told him he was about to leave on his adventure. Red was happy for him, but he was still worried. He sent his Pikachu to Professor Oak to give to Ash. Then, the events of the anime transpired.

The biggest hole with this theory is that there is no real explanation as to why Blue’s name changes to Gary, nor why Gary restarts his journey after becoming champion, then losing to Red. All in all, I love this theory. It adds to the events of the show and games, and really makes you think about what has happened in the media that you love so much.

Ash forgot to feed Pikachu a few too many times…

Another theory is that Eagun from Pokemon Colosseum is one of the three trainers. He lives in a community for retired trainers and is referred to as a “legendary trainer”. His first Pokemon was a Pikachu as well. It’s not clear which of the trainers he would be, as parts of his description fit parts of all three trainers. Ash and Red (video games) started with a Pikachu, both Reds could be considered legendary trainers, but Eagun talks, unlike video game Red. Eagun also possessed a Master Ball, like video game Red. Eagun has seen a Ho-oh, just like Ash. However, there is no reason these characters would change their name to Eagun, nor move to the Orre region, a very unhospitable and undesirable region compared to Kanto. It’s a decent theory, but it has a few holes.

Also, Ash could NEVER grow a beard. EVER.

It is strange that these characters all have similar physical features, similar Pokemon, and are all from Pallet Town. Another generally accepted theory is that all three of these characters are different versions of each other in parallel universes. This is supported by the fact that Pokemon battles are very different in each medium of art. Small differences that their stories had could have developed into bigger parts of their personalities, shaping them in different ways. Perhaps Red from Adventures has such a wildly different journey than Red and Ash because some small event lead to him losing both parents, catching many different Pokemon, and having such a radically different personality to the other two characters, and simiar things could probable be said about either VG Red or Ash. However, there’s one HUGE problem I have with this theory, and it all boils down to one thing. Pokemon Yellow Version.

You sneaky bastard…

Jessie and James from Team Rocket are in Pokemon Yellow, which stars Red. If you’ve seen even one episode of the anime, you know that this particular squadron of Team Rocket harass Ash nearly every day. The characters in Pokemon Yellow only have one difference from the Jessie and James in the show; that they keep their Meowth in a PokeBall. That could mean that this Jessie and James are parallel to the Jessie and James from the anime, just like Ash, Red, and Red. All in all, this is a good theory, and most people accept it as what has actually happened.

Ash, Red and Red are classic characters that are beloved by many. I hope I cleared up some of the confusion about the characters, and provided some theories that will help you develop your opinion, because, after all, these aren’t iron clad facts, and coming up with your own thoughts about Pokemon can be just as fun as watching the show, playing the games, or reading the manga.

Written by Richard Fightmaster
Edited by An-chan, Bay Alexison and bobandbill.

Before I start, I’d just like to let you know that there are MAJOR spoilers for the Pokemon anime, games, and the Pokemon Adventures manga.
